Separate cpu processor from heat sink?

OK call me a newb but, how do you separate the CPU from the heat sink? Is there some sort of trick? I got a new box and some parts and wated to put a larger heat sink and fan in it. I removed the clips from the heat sink and when I pulled it up the cpu cane up with it. OUCH! It appears to be glued to the heat sink or something. Do I need some kind of solvent?

try sliding the CPU sideway across the heat sink. The CPU compund is not an adhesive but if you get a good bond without air bubles it can be nearly impossible to pull apart. Much easier to slide.

Desperate times call for desparate measures I guess.  Glad we got to you in time.
